Breeds of pigs

1.     Landrace (Danish, Dutch, British); whitish pink in colour, dropping long and large ears, prolific and meat type

2.     Large white Yorkshire; whitish pink in colour, erect ears, prolific and meat type 

3.     Hampshire; whitish pick, black ring around body, meat type

4.     Duroc; brownish in colour , fast growing fat type

5.     Poland china; black spotted, fast growing fat type

6.     Local breed; fairly dwarfish with pointed snout, either black or black with white or grey patches, eats a certain amount of forage, prolific and meat type but slow growing

Breeding 

At 6months, the boar is mature for service. At about the same age, the gilt comes in heat.  

Signs of heat

The signs of heat are;

1.     Swelling and reddening of the vulva

2.     Slimy discharge from the vulva

3.     Sow standing rigidly if pressure is applied on her hips

4.     Plied on her hips

5.     Becoming restless and grunting

The signs of heat in pigs, last from 35hours to 48 hours. Gilt/sow should be taken to the boar twice for servicing during this period with an interval of about 12 to 15 hours. The animal should be given fattening ratio during pregnancy until 3weeks before parturition. The protein content in the feeds should be increased to stimulate the final growth of foetus and to increase mammary gland production in the pig 

Farrowing

The following signs are readiness for farrowing

1.     Restlessness

2.     The desire to make a bed of any surrounding straw some milk can be drain from the tits 

When the sow is ready for farrowing, the udder should be disinfected. After farrowing, the navel of the piglets should be disinfected with iodine. About 3 to 7 days after birth, the piglets should be given an inferno or iron injection.
