POULTRY (BROILERS) PRODUCTION AND ACTUAL VACCINATION – PROGRAMME AND TREATMENT
INTRODUCTION:
Broiler is one of the birds noted for their fast growth. But for its parent stock, rare species imported mainly from Israel. Broiler requires adequate attention and carefulness, but any act of carelessness can wipe out the whole stock.
Apart from the hygiene, care should be taken in feeding, vaccination and medication of the birds to enhance qualitative production. Broiler is reared for meat production, and it should be ready for market within eight mouths. As farmers, our task is to map out guidelines or strategies for a profitable broiler production.
BROODING
This is the most important days of a
bird life span. Its period is between the first day and the end of fourth week.
Any mistake make during this period
may result in the latter days of the bird i.e. if they live up to that age.
THE BROODING HOUSE
This is a special house where the
chicks are kept. It is to be noted here that the chicks may not necessarily be
the ones that are hatched from one’s farm. We have to note that when house are
built it should be spacious enough to accommodate big birds.

PREPARATION FOR NEW BIRDS
MATERIALS NEEDED FOR BROODING:
Materials needed for brooding
includes wood shavings, drinker, feeds, stoves, Hoovers, kerosene, matches,
scales, mats, nylons, vaccines, syringes, buckets, wheelbarrow, disinfectants
for washing the drinkers e.t.c. All this materials must arrive before the day
of the arrival of the chicks.
FOUR DAYS TO THE ARRIVAL OF THE BIRDS
1. Disinfect the whole house and the
wood shavings;
2. Spread the wood shavings evenly on
the floor, the depth must not be less than 2 inches, the area to cover is
dependent on number of birds being.
3. Place the hoovers around area to be
used at different locations to disseminate the heat.
4. Provide flat drinkers and feeders /
check the feed supply too. Cover the brooding house with the black nylon and
mats.
ARRIVAL DAY
Four hours before the arrival, put on
the stove, place them under the hoovers and get the scale and the vitamins
ready
WHEN THEY ARRIVE
The first thing is to weigh them to
know their weight. Sample weights of 10, 20 and 30 can be taken. Count the
number of birds supplied and vitamin is given in water for the birds and feed.
