Business plans and feasibility study on Pineapple plantation or any Planatation

Pineapple plantation is another money spinner. It is a fruit with lots of economic importance, aside from been eaten as raw fruit, either, ordinary or in making salads or fruit cocktails. It is also processed into fruit juice, Wine, Jam, etc.

Pineapple farmers do not only make money from the sales of pineapple fruits but also, in the sales of pineapple suckers to intending farmers. Hence, pineapple is one of the current money spinner in the agro-business today, as far as farming enterprise is concerned.

CLEARING THE SITE

Clearing the farmland to remove any stumps before ploughing the land is very important. After which you allow it for a week in other to expose possible insect attackers to sunlight. This will help eradicate most insect attackers on the soil. Thereafter, you can ridge the farmland. Experiences have shown in recent times that pineapple grows and does well when planted on ridges than on a flat harrowed land. This is due to the fragile nature of the root.

SEEDLING

Always know that; there are two basic ways to plant pineapple, you can either plant the sucker or the crown.

VARIETY

There are many pineapple specie in Nigeria but the two most economical viable pineapple species suitable for commercial farming are; The smooth cayenne and the Golden Yellow also known as Pure Gold pineapple. It is important to ascertain the kind of variety you want to buy before investing on it.

REQUIRED SPACING

Pineapple plants are usually classified in double or triple row. A spacing of 1m from the center to another center of the beds / ridges, rows of 60cm between beds/ridges and plant in 30cm in the rows as recommended (30 x 60 x 100cm) Resulting in a plant population of 55,000 plants / ha. Ensure that your suckers are ready before planting. Peel off the first two-leaf layers of the root base so as to expose the fresh young stem, thereby stimulating quick growth rate. When planting, ensure that the plant suckers planted with a depth of 10cm.

CONTROL OF WEED

It is important to control weeds in the pineapple farm during the first four months after planting in other to avoid slow growth rate of pineapple plants that may result from weed competition in nutrient and space. Air with culture. A pre-emergence application of Atrazine @ 4kg/ha is required immediately after planting to block the germination of weed seeds as long as possible. Thereafter, a tank mix of atrazine and diuron can be used subsequently for weed control in pineapple farm.

Pests & Diseases

Care for pineapple plants becomes important to protect them from pests and diseases. Mealy bug is a common pest of pineapple found on the surface of the pineapple leaf as well as inside the enclosed blossom cups. It is also a vector of wilt disease in pineapple. Mealy bug can be controlled by spraying insecticide in the morning or evening on the pineapple field. Control of nematodes is necessary because they hinder the growth of pineapple. 1, 3-Dichloropropene or 1, 3-D is effective in nematode control and is applied using the fumigation process. In this process, the soil is smoked. The unhealthy insects that cause wilting of pineapple leaves are controlled by the spraying of pesticides. Fire ants that carry unhealthy insects from one plant to another must be checked in this case. Root rot disease is controlled by improved soil drainage and fungicide application.

FLOWERING

Induction of flowering is undertaken to control the time of harvest and maturity in pineapples. Use of chemicals to control the natural and 'organic' growth of any plant is artificial and unnatural; however, cultivators tend to practice it to avoid excessive fruit production during peak periods. Earlier, ethylene gas was commonly used to control the fruiting process. Today, hormones such as a-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) are used. When a pineapple plant is 6 months old, it is treated with hormones to induce flowering.

HARVESTING

Under natural condition, that is an un-induced pineapple farm, pineapples is been harvested between late April to August. The fruit usually ripens about 5 months after flowering. With irregular flowering, harvesting is spread over a long period of time, thereby bringing pineapple production from planting to harvesting between 19-20 months, but induce ones can take 14 – 16 months
