Fishes are animals that lives and breathe in water habitat. Some of them lives in fresh lake or stream waters, while others lives in salt water of the seas and oceans. Although, some can live in both fresh and salt water.
All fishes are vertebrates (animals with backbones), with most of them covered up with scales for body protection.

KINDS OF FISH

There are about 25,000 different species (kinds) of fishes and even more that are not known to man in the world at large. Fishes comes in different sizes and shapes. The huge whale shark can be as long as 40 feet (12 meters), while others like tiny goby fish can be as small as 0.4 inch (1 centimeter) long. Some fishes can be jawed or jaw-less, some like the Hagfish, lampreys, and eels are jawless fishes. Jawless fish do not have fins, scales, or jaws with teeth, while jawed fishes are bony or cartilaginous, depending on species. Bony fishes has skeletons made of bones while Cartilaginous fishes has softer bony materials called cartilages instead of bone. Sharks, rays, and chimaeras are cartilaginous fishes.

SOME FISHES CAN LIVE IN HOT OR FREEZING WATER

Antarctic ice-fishes can live in water temperatures that are below 32° Fahrenheit (0° Celsius), while Desert pupfish can live in water that is hotter than 100° Fahrenheit (40° Celsius).

HOW DOES FISHES SWIM?

Most fishes swim by using their side, back, and tail fins while swimming. Fins are movable, fanlike appendages of a fish, used to propel itself and also aids it in maneuvering. A fish moves through the water by swinging its tail fins in a sideways direction in other to create motion, while other fins help to control direction or stop movement. Although, other fins also aids it to move faster in water.

Most fishes have a torpedo shape with their bodies pointing at the head while it gets slimmer at the tail region, giving it a streamlined body which helps it to swim faster in water. Sailfish can swim as fast as 70 miles per hour (110 kilometers per hour). Others fishes have unusual shapes like the “Rays” which have flat, disc-shaped bodies, with Large fins like “wings”, which goes out from its ray head. In swimming, rays flap its fins. Most fishes also has swim bladders, which enables them to swim in an upwards direction without sinking. They practically fill up their swim bladders with air to enable it act like life jackets to maintain their stability in water.

HOW DOES FISHES BREATHE?

Most fishes breathe through the use of their gills. Gills are tiny tubes that are mostly found under the operculum of a fish which carries vessels of blood in a fish. The operculum is mostly found at the ends of the fish head. As soon as the fish open its mouth, lots of water goes into it fish’s mouth and passes out through the gills. “Water”, which is made of H2O, that is; two molecules of hydrogen and one molecules of oxygen, passes through the gills, while the gills traps the oxygen it can trap as the water rushes out of the operculum. Blood in the gills picks up the oxygen and takes it round in the fish’s body to keep all the cells alive. While the waste carbon dioxide goes out of the fish’s body through the gills in return.
Lungfishes are not an exception, they also breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. Most of them swims out of the water or better still jumped up to take in oxygen, while others get oxygen directly from the water.

FISH RESPONSE

Fishes has great responses to the sense of smell, which aid them in search of food. Most fishes can also see with their eyes, even though, some don’t have eyes and others that lives in total darkest at the bottom of the sea does not see, it does mean that they all do not see.Fish also has a great responses to the sense of feeling things all around them. They sometimes feel things before they can see them. They can also tell when danger is coming their way. Minnows can even tell, when another minnow is being attacked. The skin of a minnow in danger, gives off a chemical to alert other minnow around to escape for their lives. Their skin chemicals also help them in swimming in groups called schools, which is aided by sensing the skin chemicals. Fishes in a school can all turn, stop, or swim away at one time.

WHAT DOES FISH EAT

Most fishes eats meat, zooplankton, and phytoplankton and so on. Sharks and other big fish eat smaller fishes. Fishes like sharks has large, sharp teethes, which are used to grab their prey and bite/eat them, while others suck prey into their mouths and use their smaller teeth to grind them up. For those that do not have teeth, they just swallow their prey. In the deep ocean where there are no source of sunlight, their body’s chemicals produces a glowing lighting that attract prey to them.
